I found it really difficult to care about Jason's NPC allies. Riley, on the other hand, began weak and remained weak. I felt that Frank became a stronger and stronger character throughout the book and I was glad to see his development. We need interludes and other points of view to see other perspectives on the game world, how jason is influencing the world beyond the Twilight Throne, and how the gaming industry is shifting in response to this wildly popular VRMMO. Jason is such a strong character that the focus on him deprives somewhat from this story, in my view. Is he really the most serious in-game threat that Jason is expected to face? What are the other four player factions up to? All he does is descend even further into psychopathy. Perhaps we'll see more of this later.Īlexios's presence was somewhat weak. I would argue that players of non-necromancer classes, in order to be balanced against Jason's capabilities, would need to have truly remarkable area-of-effect attacks. Amazing imagery that made me think of Warcraft 3 quite a bit. Necromantic siege engines! With exploding zombie corpses! Reanimated raid level bosses. He is focusing on gathering allies and logistical resources before the coming battles for control, and is rounding out his necromantic capabilities in great ways through sheer creativity. Within the game, Jason's progression as a villainous warlord is headed in a strong direction. Something akin to the 'forum thread' chapters in Worm see example here would be a welcome addition. If there's anything this novel definitely lacks, it's a general 'reaction' point of view to Jason's actions. Reading of Jason's streaming contract raises a good point - gaming streamers are certainly the future of e-sports celebrity, and reading of his exploits in the course of his streaming was hilarious. The internal corporate drama over reigning in and suppressing Alfred is clearly headed somewhere and is certain to go nuclear after the events in the novel's final pages. The out-of-game political storylines are largely handled well. I was very happy with Travis Bagwell's latest release - just like with the original Awaken Online I devoured the entire book in a single day and plan on re-reading it shortly. Since it's been three days since the book's release, I figured it was about time we had a thread for this book specifically.
